A Gateway usually refers to a network device that has routing functions and can achieve interconnection between networks at the network layer and above. The main function of a gateway is to act as an intermediary for high-level protocol conversion between different networks, ensuring the correct transmission and processing of information. It can be used for interconnection between wide area networks (Wans) or local area networks (Lans). The gateway can not only forward messages but also repackage the received information to meet the requirements of the destination system. In addition, the gateway can also perform functions such as load balancing, security control and authentication, enhancing the flexibility and security of the network.

In a microservice architecture, the gateway plays a crucial role. It is a service responsible for managing and optimizing the invocation between services, including but not limited to tasks such as request filtering, protocol adaptation, rate limiting and circuit breaking, log monitoring, security authentication, and traffic guidance. Through these functions, the gateway helps simplify the interaction between the client and multiple microservices, reduces the complexity of directly accessing each service, and at the same time provides a unified interface to access the back-end services.
